Your child's first dance class is booked. You've got the water bottle, you've found the venue, you've even attempted a bun and read the welcome email 20 times.
And yet, there are unwritten rules you are not aware of. The things every seasoned dance parent knows and every new one learns the slightly harder way. After nearly a decade of welcoming new families into our academies across North London, we've decided it's time someone wrote them down.
Ballet shoes look identical. Cardigans vanish. Water bottles form their own society in lost property. Write your child's name on everything (shoes, bags, jumpers, bottles...) Future you standing at the lost property box the following week, will be incredibly grateful.
Here's the one that surprises new parents most: some children spend their first class watching. Glued to your leg, peeking from the doorway, refusing to join the circle.
This is completely normal. Watching is how many children learn. They're taking it all in, working out the room, deciding it's safe. Then one week, without warning, they'll let go of your hand and join in like they've been doing it forever. Our teachers have seen it a hundred times. Don't panic or push, just keep coming back.
The most powerful question in a dance parent's toolkit isn't "Were you good?" or "Did you learn the routine?" It's: "Did you have fun?" Children take their cues from us. If class is framed as a test, it becomes one. If it's framed as their happy place, it becomes that instead. Celebrate the trying, not just the achieving.
Once dance enters your home, it becomes a venue. You will be handed tickets to impromptu performances, the sofa is now front-row seating, and there will be encores whether you request them or not. That living-room confidence is exactly what walks onto a real stage later, and those wobbly kitchen performances become core memories.
We encourage our students to take their classes outside the studio. When a child actively makes the time and effort to rehearse and practice what their have been learning, this is when we see the most progress.
Regardless of age and level, children progress at wildly different speeds. The child who cartwheels at four and the child who finds rhythm at seven are both exactly on time. At Moving Waves this one is close to our hearts: we're not a strict, old-school academy, and we never line children up against each other. Confidence, creativity and joy first. The skills follow, always.
Your first show week will involve running around finding your tee shirt, hairspray bottles, a snack schedule, loads of logistics and rehearsals, and at least one moment of "why are we doing this?"
However, when the lights go down and you see your child shining on that stage, you'll understand instantly why every parent in the room is filming through happy tears and why you and your child have commited to this.

What age should my child start dance classes? Most children are ready for structured classes from around age 3-4, though many thrive earlier in creative movement sessions. At Moving Waves, our academy classes run for ages 3–17.
What should my child wear to their first dance class? Comfortable clothes they can move in and bare feet or trainers are perfect for a first class. Style-specific shoes and uniforms can come once they've settled in. No need to buy everything on day one.
What if my child won't join in? Completely normal, especially in the early weeks. Watching is participating. Keep attending, keep it low-pressure, and let them join in their own time. They almost always do.
Can I watch the class? We encourage parents to be outside the classroom to avoid distractions. However, our three academies have a cosy seating area from where you can wait and take a peek into the class if needed.
How do I know which dance style my child will like? You don't, and that's fine! This is exactly why our 2-week trial exists: unlimited classes across all three of our academies in Harringay (N15), Archway (N19) and Bounds Green (N11), so your child can try Ballet, Jazz, Street, Contemporary, Acro, Musical Theatre, and more before choosing their favourite.
