Children’s Mental Health Week is a powerful reminder of how important it is to nurture children’s emotional wellbeing, confidence, and self-expression- not just at home and school, but through the activities they take part in each week.
At Moving Waves, we see first-hand how the arts can transform how children feel about themselves. Through our dance academy classes and after-school sessions, we support children aged 4–17 to move, create, connect, and thrive in a safe and joyful environment.
For over 10 years Moving Waves has placed creativity at the heart of children’s wellbeing - because when children are given space to express themselves, they grow in confidence, resilience, and self-belief.
Creative activities play a vital role in supporting children’s emotional development. Whether through movement, drawing, painting, or performance, the arts help children process feelings in ways that words often can’t.
Regular engagement in creative activities supports children’s mental wellbeing by:
Dance and visual art uniquely combine creativity with structure, making them especially powerful tools for supporting children’s mental and emotional health.
Our children’s dance academy classes run weekly during term time across our 3 North London locations, offering a consistent, supportive routine where children can grow at their own pace.
With classes held at Chestnuts Community Centre (Haringey), Whittington Park Community Centre (Archway/Tufnell Park), and Bounds Green Bowls and Tennis Club, our academy provides welcoming spaces where children feel safe, seen, and celebrated. At Moving Waves, dance is never about perfection. It’s about expression, joy, and confidence.

Alongside dance, our after-school sessions offer children a calm and creative space to relax after the school day. We offer workshops in Art, Dance, Drama, Musical Theatre, Yoga, Music and more!
Creative sessions allow children to slow down, focus, and express emotions visually. Through hands-on creative projects, children build confidence, patience, and emotional awareness- all while enjoying the freedom to express themselves without pressure.
For many children, these sessions provide valuable downtime away from screens and academic expectations, supporting balance and emotional wellbeing.

Joining a weekly creative activity provides children with far more than a hobby. Our dance academy classes and after-school art sessions support:
